How to Choose a Dash Cam in Australia?
A practical Australian guide to choosing dash cam channels, resolution, WiFi, parking monitoring, storage, night vision and installation for your vehicle.
Choosing a dash cam is easier when you start with how you use your vehicle. A commuter, rideshare driver and touring family may need different camera coverage. Compare the number of views, recording quality, storage, power and installation—not one headline specification. Features vary by model, so always check the individual product page and manual.
Choose the right number of channels
A channel is one recorded camera view. A 1-channel model records the road ahead and is the simplest option. A 2-channel front and rear dash cam adds useful context for rear impacts and events behind the vehicle. A 3-channel system normally adds a cabin-facing camera, which may suit rideshare, taxi or commercial drivers. Some systems offer four adjustable views.
More channels provide broader coverage, but also mean more wiring, more files and faster storage use. Choose the views you will genuinely use.
Compare each camera’s resolution
Do not assume every camera in a multi-channel system records at the resolution shown in the product headline. A model may record higher-resolution video at the front and lower-resolution video at the rear or in the cabin. Simultaneous recording settings can also differ.
Higher resolution may capture more detail when lighting, focus and placement are favourable, but it creates larger files. Understand what WiFi actually does
Most ordinary WiFi dash cams create a local connection to a nearby phone. A compatible app may provide a live preview, clip review, selected downloads and supported settings. WiFi does not automatically mean internet access, 4G, GPS tracking, cloud storage or remote viewing from another location.

Know the difference between GPS, G-Sensor and motion detection
- GPS may save location or speed information with footage, depending on the model. GPS alone does not make a dash cam remotely trackable.
- G-Sensor detects sudden movement or impact. On supported models it can protect the current file from normal loop recording.
- Motion detection reacts to visible changes in the camera’s view. It is not the same as impact detection and does not guarantee every event will be captured.
Check parking-monitoring power requirements
A dash cam cannot continue monitoring after its accessory socket turns off unless it has a suitable ongoing power source. Some models support parking monitoring through a compatible hardwire kit; others use different arrangements. A hardwire kit supplies power but cannot add motion, impact or time-lapse functions that the camera does not support.
Hardwiring involves the vehicle electrical system. Incorrect work can flatten a battery, damage trim or interfere with vehicle circuits. Use a qualified auto electrician or professional installer, particularly for vehicles with complex electronics or airbags.
Select compatible storage
Use the card type, speed rating and maximum capacity specified for the camera. A larger compatible card usually keeps more footage before old unlocked files are overwritten, but it does not improve image quality. Recording time depends on resolution, frame rate, compression and channel count.
Format and inspect the card as instructed. Save important footage promptly rather than treating a loop-recording card as permanent storage.
Check what is included
Product bundles vary. Confirm whether the rear camera, memory card, car charger, mounting accessories and hardwire kit are included or optional. Also check the power connector and maximum supported card size. This avoids ordering a camera that needs an additional accessory before it can provide the coverage or parking setup you expected.
Keep night performance realistic
“Night vision” may describe low-light processing, WDR or, on some cabin cameras, infrared lighting. Results still depend on street lighting, headlights, glare, rain, windscreen condition and placement. In complete darkness with no useful ambient light, performance depends on the camera and conditions. Infrared cabin LEDs do not necessarily illuminate the road ahead.
Plan the installation
Mount the camera where it has a clear view without obstructing the driver. Keep cables away from pedals, controls and airbag deployment paths. A rear camera requires cable routing through the vehicle, with extra care around powered tailgates and moving hatches. Professional installation is worthwhile for hardwire kits and concealed multi-camera wiring.
Match the system to your driving
- Daily commuting: dependable front recording and a compatible card; add rear coverage if useful.
- Family cars and SUVs: 2-channel coverage often balances usefulness, storage and installation.
- Rideshare or taxi: consider front, cabin and rear views, plus appropriate passenger notices and data handling.
- Touring: prioritise secure mounting, sufficient storage and convenient file review.
- Parking concerns: confirm the exact parking mode, compatible power supply and low-voltage protection.
Final checklist
Before ordering, confirm camera views, resolution for each channel, included and maximum storage, power connection, parking requirements, app compatibility and box contents. WiFi, GPS, G-Sensor, motion detection, parking monitoring and 4K recording are not standard across every MCNE model.
After installation, review a short sample in daylight and at night. Check that the horizon is level, the road occupies most of the frame, the rear view is unobstructed and timestamps are correct.
