Dash Cam Memory Cards Explained: Capacity, Compatibility and Care
Learn how dash cam memory cards handle loop recording, how capacity and speed affect compatibility, and when to format or replace a card.
A dash cam memory card is not permanent storage. The camera records in a loop, replacing older unlocked files as the card fills. Choosing the right card therefore means checking compatibility, capacity, write performance and durability—not simply buying the largest or fastest card available.

How loop recording uses the card
Most dash cams divide video into short files. When available space runs out, loop recording overwrites the oldest unlocked file and continues recording. The camera may protect a clip after a button press or a supported G-Sensor event, but protected files still occupy space.
Copy important footage to a phone or computer promptly. Do not rely on the card to preserve an incident indefinitely, especially if the camera continues operating for many hours afterwards.
32GB, 64GB or larger?
A larger compatible card usually retains more footage before older files are overwritten. It does not improve video quality. The most suitable capacity depends on:
- front, rear, cabin or multi-channel recording;
- resolution and frame rate for each channel;
- video compression and bit rate;
- whether audio is recorded;
- parking or continuous recording; and
- how often footage is reviewed and saved.
A multi-channel or high-resolution dash cam normally uses storage faster than a simple front-only camera. There is no accurate universal recording-time table because cameras can create very different file sizes at the same headline resolution.
Check the maximum supported capacity
Do not assume a dash cam accepts every microSD card. The camera firmware and file system may limit the supported capacity. A card larger than the stated maximum may fail to format, stop recording or behave unpredictably.
Check whether the camera requires microSDHC or microSDXC, the supported capacity range and any stated speed class. If a product includes a card, confirm its capacity on the current product page rather than assuming every bundle is identical.
Speed class matters, but compatibility comes first
A dash cam writes video continuously, sometimes from several cameras at once. The card must sustain the write rate required by that model. Labels such as Class 10, U1, U3, V10 or V30 describe different performance classifications, but a higher label alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Use the specification recommended by the camera manufacturer. An unsupported card can still cause recording gaps, card errors or failed files even when its advertised peak speed appears high.
Why high-endurance cards are useful
Dash cams repeatedly write and erase data, often inside a vehicle exposed to heat and cold. Cards designed for high-endurance video recording are generally a sensible choice because they are intended for repeated write cycles. Even an endurance card is a consumable item and should be checked regularly.
Buy from a reputable source. Counterfeit or mislabelled cards may report a false capacity and can corrupt footage when the genuine storage limit is reached.
Included cards differ between products

Periodic formatting may help clear fragmented or accumulated protected files, but follow the model instructions. Never remove the card while the camera is writing. Switch the camera off and allow it to finish saving the current file before removal.
Signs that a card needs attention
- The camera repeatedly reports a card or formatting error.
- Recording stops or restarts unexpectedly.
- Files are missing, corrupted or cannot be played.
- The displayed capacity is incorrect.
- The camera asks for frequent formatting despite correct setup.
First confirm that the card meets the model specification, then format and test it as directed. Replace the card if errors continue. Also check the camera’s power supply, because unstable power can sometimes look like a storage fault.
Downloading and backing up footage

After an incident, save the original file without editing, confirm that the copy plays correctly and keep a backup. The exact way footage, GPS data or multiple camera streams are displayed depends on the model and software.

- Consider channel count and recording quality when choosing capacity.
